Fernando Martinez Garcia

Fernando Martinez Garcia, FMG was born in Ferrol, Spain, in 1949. In 1960 he went to Madrid where he pursued his academic studies while simultaneously studying painting. In 1974 he obtained the degree of Technical Engineer in Topography, wich led him to entering the National Geographic Institute.
In 1979, he went to Barcelona to study Fine Arts, where he specialized in Abstract painting, the one that is uniquely abstract and reflects a preoccupation with the use of space. In 1985, he took a degree in Fine Arts and was awarded a grant from the government of Catalonia, Spain, to create sculptured pieces through a collage of objects. Following this, he continued his studies of Art with an emphasis on the relationship between art and its philosophical aspects. Apart from the stylistic trends of the 1980’s, FMG has concentrated on an introspective search of himself, where in the 1990’s he has achieved a definitively personal style where line drawing and figurative drawing meet in large surfaces of background colour. In addition, the 1990 exhibition at the Santa Monica Center of Art in Barcelona affirmed his style and an acceptance of his artistic language that forms a part of the conceptual character of New Painting. His incessant work in painting, reflected in the numerous international exhibitions, has established F.M.G. as one of the most interesting and promising artists of our time.

The most recent paintings of F.M.G. focus on the synthesis of three different lines of thought that continue with his earlier developments in the fields of drawing, sculpture and painting. The superimposition and juxtaposition of these different forms creatively play against one another in the same painting and offer the viewer an opportunity to contemplate the painting beyond one uniquely represented space, like something that seduces the senses intellectually.
